Historical Origins and the Vision of Sakthan Thampuran

The Thrissur Pooram is not a centuries-old tradition in the same vein as some Chola festivals, but rather a masterclass in administrative and cultural reform. It was introduced by Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin (1790–1805). Before his reign, the primary festival was the Arattupuzha Pooram, but when several local temples were denied participation due to delays caused by heavy rains, the Maharaja decided to organize a separate, unified festival in Thrissur. He divided the participating temples into two rival yet friendly groups: the Paramekkavu side and the Thiruvambady side, creating a competitive spirit that fuels the festival’s grandeur to this day.

The Sacred Rituals and the "Vilambaram"

The festival follows the Malayalam calendar month of Medam, occurring when the moon rises with the Pooram star. The celebrations officially began seven days prior with the Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) at the participating temples. However, the true momentum began with the Vilambaram ritual. This year, the the caparisoned elephant carried the idol of the Nadakkavu Temple to the Vadakkunnathan Temple, ceremoniously pushing open the south gopuram gate to declare the Pooram open.

The religious heart of the festival is the belief that ten deities from surrounding temples visit Lord Shiva at the Vadakkunnathan Temple to pay their respects. This meeting of the Utchavars (processional deities) creates a 36-hour-long marathon of spiritual and sensory experiences.

The Spectacle: Percussion, Elephants, and Kudamattam

The 2026 Pooram was a visual and auditory feast, highlighted by several key events:

Ilanjithara Melam: Often described as the world’s largest live orchestra, this percussion ensemble featured hundreds of artists playing the chenda, ilathalam, and kurumkuzhal. The technical brilliance and spellbinding rhythm of the Melam remain the soul of the afternoon festivities.

The Elephant Pageantry: Approximately 90 well-trained, caparisoned elephants participated in various processions throughout the city. Each elephant was adorned with the Nettipattam (golden headgear), crafted fresh from scratch for this year’s event.

Kudamattam: In the evening, 30 elephants—15 from each side—stood trunk-to-trunk in a colorful display. The "changing of umbrellas" (Kudamattam) saw the two Devaswom compete to display the most vibrant and intricately designed parasols, drawing massive cheers from the milling crowds in the Swaraj Round.

A Secular Mosaic

Despite the humid weather and the inevitable dust of a million-strong gathering, the spirit of the people remained undampened. One of the most significant aspects of the 2026 Pooram was its continued secular character. People of all faiths participated in the preparations—from the artisans making the umbrellas to the crowds watching the legendary fireworks that illuminated the night sky. In a time of political friction, the Thrissur Pooram stood as a testament to religious harmony and the enduring power of Kerala’s "cultural capital" to unite its people through shared heritage.
