Tamil Nadu, the land of the Cholas, is home to some of the world’s most exquisite bronze idols, crafted with the ancient Panchaloha alloy and unmatched metallurgical skill. Their antiquity, craftsmanship, and historic value make them irresistible targets for international smugglers. While occasional thefts were reported in the early 20th century, the problem escalated sharply after the 1970s. After 1970 ever since the Dravidian parties, in particular, when DMK came to power, shameless stealing of temple idols, artifacts, parts of stone pillars, carved sculptures had increased several times.

Weak administrative oversight, political indifference, and corruption within certain layers of temple bureaucracy enabled organised cartels to loot priceless icons from village temples and heritage shrines. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the antique idol thefts from TamilNadu seriously and accordingly he accelerated the recovery of temple idols from abroad. The PM said that "more than 200 precious idols" have been successfully brought back to India since 2014.
According to the HR&CE records, between 1992 and 2017, temple authorities reported 372 stone idols and 832 bronze icons stolen from 387 temples across Tamil Nadu. Out of over 30,000 temples, only 11,512 have strongrooms or basic security — a vulnerability that smugglers have repeatedly exploited.
Two of the biggest idol smuggling networks were operated by Subhash Kapoor, who ran the Art of the Past gallery in New York, and Sharad Kumar Dugar, responsible for smuggling idols worth crores. Kapoor alone is suspected to have trafficked hundreds of bronzes to US, Canada, Singapore, and Europe. Several HR&CE insiders were believed to have aided these networks, as moving large icons without inside help was nearly impossible.
One of the most extraordinary cases is the Sivapuram idol scandal. In 1951, six Chola bronzes were excavated at Sivapuram near Kumbakonam. When sent for cleaning, a conspiracy involving sculptor Ramaswamy Sthapathy and smugglers Doss and Thilagar replaced the originals with fakes. The originals were sold in Mumbai and then smuggled abroad. The theft came to light only in 1965 when British Museum scholar Douglas Barrett identified the Nataraja in the temple as a replica. A long investigation traced the idol through art dealers in Bombay before it was finally brought back to India by court order in the late 1980s. It now remains in safe custody at the Tiruvarur icon centre.
More recently, Tamil Nadu’s Idol Wing CID, under officers such as K. Jayanth Murali, intensified global tracing operations. Nearly 200 stolen artefacts have been brought back to India since 2014, including bronzes from the USA, Australia, and Canada. In 2020, three Chola bronzes stolen from a Tamil Nadu temple were returned by the UK. In 2022, the Idol Wing traced a 12th-century Parvati idol, stolen in 1971 from Vedapureeswarar Temple, to the Bonhams auction house in New York. Investigation supported by UNESCO conventions helped India stake claim to the idol.
Cases continue to surface. In 2023, a 7-kg Maragatha Lingam (emerald) worth ₹25 crore was seized near Salem, proving that the illicit market for temple artefacts still thrives. on March 17, the idol wing sleuths had seized Maragatha(emerald) lingam in Tharamangalam near Salem, and five persons including a woman, were arrested.
The persistent thefts underscore the need for stronger security, transparent auditing, and depoliticised temple administration to preserve Tamil Nadu’s incomparable sacred heritage.
