The Victoria Jubilee Museum (Renamed Bapu Museum In Honor Of Gandhiji): History, Architecture, and Heritage Conservation

Located along Mahatma Gandhi Road (Bandar Road) in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, the Bapu Museum—formerly known as the Victoria Jubilee Museum—stands as a monumental testament to India’s cultural heritage and freedom movement. Beyond serving as a repository of historical artifacts, the museum is itself a living monument whose evolution reflects over a century of regional, national, and political history.

History and Evolution

The museum was established to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's coronation in 1887. The foundation stone was laid on June 27, 1887, by Robert Sewell, the then-District Collector of Krishna district and a prominent historian. Constructed initially to house industrial exhibitions, the facility subsequently transitioned through various administrative hands, including the Zamindars of Nuzvid, the District Board of Krishna, and the Zilla Parishad

.In 1921, the building played a crucial role in Indian nationalist history. During the All India Congress Committee meeting held on these premises, Sri Pingali Venkayya presented a tricolor flag to Mahatma Gandhi, who subsequently incorporated the spinning wheel (charkha) into its design, creating the precursor to India’s national flag. In 1926, the building temporarily served as the founding site for Andhra University. Recognizing its historical and cultural importance, the Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh, took over the property in 1962 and formally established an archaeological museum. It was later renamed the Bapu Museum in honor of Sattiraju Lakshminarayana (famously known as Bapu), the celebrated Indian film director, cartoonist, and illustrator.
