Garuda Seva: A Sacred Procession in Vishnu Temples

Garuda Seva is a revered ritual associated with major Vishnu temples, especially during the auspicious Brahmotsavam festival. This grand event features a religious procession in which the deity Vishnu, along with his consorts, is paraded on his celestial mount, Garuda. This mount, often depicted as a large kite or bird, symbolizes strength and divine support. The Garuda Seva procession is a significant spectacle, drawing thousands of devotees who gather to witness this divine event.

There are Garuda seva rituals   held in  many  temples of Tamil Nadu but the one held in at Varadaraja Perumal kovil, Kanchipuram, has a special  significance.  Indeed, it was in Kanchi that the Lord came to the rescue of Gajendra (white elephant of Indira), as the sthala Purana says. Among the three Garuda Utsavams in the temple, the one during the Brahmotsavam is the most popular. The kal-garuda sevai at Nachiyar Kovil near Kumbakonam and the eleven garuda-sevai  at Azhwar Thirunagari are very famous.Vaishnavite saint  Nammazhwar paid his tribute to Garuda’s speed by referring to him as ‘vega paravai.’

The Ritual and Its Significance

Above image:The 91st annual Maha  Garuda Sevai, considered a grand festival, was held on the 16th June of this year in the Thanjavur fort area, Tamil Nadu. What is unique about this  religious event  was  the procession of  a series of  25  Garuda vahanas, featuring 25 decorated  and bejeweled deities mounted on them. Garuda, a mythical bird, is the prime vehicle of Lord Vishnu (Perumal). Garuda's  mount symbolizes Lord's quick arrival  to alleviate  their sufferings. Though  the exact date for the 2025 festival is not specified,  it normally takes place during the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam festival in May.........

During Garuda Seva, the processional murti or utsava murti of Vishnu is placed atop the Garuda vahana, a specially designed vehicle, and taken around the temple streets. The procession allows devotees to offer their worship as the deity is carried through the streets. This ritual is not only a display of devotion but also serves as an opportunity for devotees to participate in a communal expression of faith.

Garuda, often worshipped as Veda Moorthy in Vishnu temples, holds a special place in Hindu tradition. His star, known as Swathi, is significant, similar to the deity Narasimha, an avatar of Vishnu. It is believed that the father of Kothai Nachiyar, Periazhwar, who is adopted by Andal, is considered an incarnation of Garuda. This connection adds a layer of mystique to the ritual. Furthermore, when Andal married Ranganathar at Srirangam, Garuda was said to become the father-in-law of Vishnu, highlighting the intricate web of divine relationships in Hindu mythology.

Garuda Seva Across Regions

Garuda Seva is celebrated in various forms across Tamil Nadu. In places like Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, the procession may occur both during the day and night, with over 18 separate vahanas, each carrying the utsava murti of Vishnu from different temples. These processions can last several hours, with the deities adorned in sparkling jewelry, moving around the Maada or Ratha streets. The procession stops at various points, allowing devotees to perform simple puja rituals.

One of the most prominent Garuda Seva celebrations takes place at the Tirupati Balaji Temple. This event attracts over 100,000 devotees, making it one of the largest and most significant Garuda Seva processions. The ritual also has unique variations in different temples. At Nachiyar Temple near Kumbakonam, an intriguing phenomenon occurs where the Garuda vahana’s weight appears to increase significantly during the procession, requiring more devotees to carry it. This puzzle, yet to be fully explained, adds a layer of wonder to the event.

In Kumbakonam, deities from twelve Vaishnavite shrines gather for Garuda Seva on Akshaya Tritiya Day. The Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal Temple hosts a grand Garuda Seva during its main Brahmotsavam festival. In May 2019, Thanjavur saw a remarkable event with 24 Garuda Sevai processions, featuring principal deities from surrounding temples, showcasing the grandeur of the 'Duvadasa Garudasevai' held in the city.

Overall, Garuda Seva is a vibrant and spiritually enriching experience, reflecting the deep devotion and rich cultural heritage of the Vishnu temples.
