Standing at the heart of Ludhiana, Punjab's largest industrial city, the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. For well over a century, the imposing red-brick tower has served as a symbol of Ludhiana's commercial vitality, colonial history, and civic identity. Historical Background
The Clock Tower was conceived during the British colonial period as part of an effort to beautify important urban centres while simultaneously projecting imperial authority. It was built as the Victoria Memorial Clock Tower in honour of Queen Victoria, commemorating the Silver Jubilee of her reign as Empress of India. Memorial clock towers dedicated to Queen Victoria were erected in several Indian cities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as enduring symbols of the British Empire
Construction of the tower began under the supervision of the then municipal chief engineer of Amritsar, John Gordon, who prepared its architectural design in the European Gothic tradition. Although work commenced during the latter half of the nineteenth century, the completed monument was formally inaugurated on 18 October 1906 by Sir Charles Montgomery, the Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab and its Dependencies, along with Diwan Tek Chand, then Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana.
The British deliberately selected the location of the tower because it lay between Ludhiana's flourishing commercial district and the railway station, ensuring that it would dominate the city's skyline and become the principal civic landmark.
Architectural Features
The Ghanta Ghar is an excellent example of Victorian Gothic architecture, a style extensively employed by the British in public buildings across India. Constructed primarily of red brick masonry, the tower reflects the Gothic Revival aesthetic popular in Britain during the nineteenth century.

Its principal architectural features include:
A tall square tower rising prominently above surrounding buildings.
Pointed Gothic arches and recessed windows.
Decorative cornices and mouldings.
Vertical proportions emphasizing height and grandeur.
Large clock faces installed on multiple sides, allowing visibility from different directions.
A commanding central location that made it the visual focal point of the city.
Unlike ornamental gateways or palace towers, the Ghanta Ghar was designed as a functional civic monument. The original mechanical clock, imported during the British period, required manual winding and regular maintenance. Before personal watches became common, townspeople relied upon the hourly chimes and visible clock faces to regulate daily routines, business hours and railway schedules.
Centre of Civic and Commercial Life
Situated close to Ludhiana's famous Chura Bazaar, the Clock Tower rapidly evolved into the city's busiest meeting point. Traders, merchants, travellers and residents naturally used the tower as a reference point for navigation.
Even today, directions within the old city are frequently given with reference to Ghanta Ghar. Numerous processions, public meetings, religious gatherings and political demonstrations begin or conclude around the monument, making it one of Ludhiana's principal civic spaces.
Because of its central location, the Clock Tower also became the representative emblem of Ludhiana, appearing in tourism literature, postcards and local publications.
Renaming of the Tower
During the tenure of Giani Zail Singh as Chief Minister of Punjab, the monument was officially renamed the Bhagwan Mahavir Clock Tower following requests from members of Ludhiana's Jain community. Despite the official change, the traditional name Ghanta Ghar remains deeply rooted in public memory and continues to be the name most commonly used by residents.
Additional Historical Facts
Several interesting facts contribute to the monument's significance:
The tower marked one of the earliest planned civic landmarks in colonial Ludhiana.
Its location reflected British urban planning principles, combining administrative authority with commercial accessibility.
For decades, it remained the tallest public structure in the surrounding neighbourhood.
The original mechanical clock eventually deteriorated after decades of service and was later replaced with an electronic mechanism to maintain accurate timekeeping.
The monument became an important orientation point long before modern road signage and GPS navigation.
Present Status
More than a century after its inauguration, the Ghanta Ghar continues to dominate Ludhiana's historic core. Although surrounded today by dense markets, heavy traffic and commercial establishments, it remains one of the city's most photographed landmarks.
The tower is still operational, with its modern clock mechanism serving thousands of people who pass through the bustling market every day. It remains a popular meeting place and an enduring symbol of Ludhiana's heritage.
Like many colonial-era public monuments, the Ghanta Ghar faces several conservation challenges:
Air pollution and vehicle emissions gradually discolor the brickwork.
Continuous vibrations from dense traffic may affect the structural fabric over time.
Encroachments and unplanned urban development reduce the visual prominence of the monument.
Weathering causes deterioration of masonry joints and decorative details.
Periodic maintenance of the clock mechanism is necessary to ensure accurate functioning.
Conservation experts have emphasized the need for systematic structural assessment, careful restoration of the original brick masonry using compatible materials, improved illumination, better landscaping around the tower, regulation of nearby encroachments, and the installation of informative heritage signage. Such measures would help preserve the Clock Tower as an important component of Ludhiana's urban heritage while enhancing public appreciation of its historical significance.
Legacy
The Ghanta Ghar of Ludhiana represents far more than a colonial clock tower. Over more than a hundred years, it has witnessed the city's transformation from a modest market town into one of India's foremost industrial centres. It has survived political change, independence, rapid urbanization and technological evolution while continuing to serve as Ludhiana's most recognizable landmark.
Today, the Clock Tower stands not merely as a memorial to Queen Victoria but as a shared civic monument whose identity has been reshaped by generations of Ludhiana's residents. Its enduring presence at the city's commercial heart makes it an invaluable architectural and historical symbol deserving continued preservation for future generations.
