Colonial Architectural Echoes: The Rajabai Clock Tower Of Mumbai and India’s Horological Masterpieces *

Colonial architecture in India frequently adapted European civic models to project imperial authority while incorporating local craftsmanship. A prime example of this synthesis is Mumbai's iconic Rajabai Clock Tower, situated within the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai. Designed by the renowned British architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1878, the 280-foot tower was funded by businessman Premchand Roychand and named in memory of his mother, Rajabai.

Architectural Inspiration:

London's Big Ben Sir George Gilbert Scott, who never visited India, drew direct inspiration from London’s Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) at the Houses of Parliament. The Rajabai Tower seamlessly blends Venetian Gothic and Victorian Gothic styles:

Being the tallest structure in the city in those colonial days,  the tower was restored to old glory from October 2013 to 11 May 2015,  under the  care of the heritage society and in 2018 the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation recognized the restoration of  the Rajabai Clock Tower and  the Bombay University  Library.SoIt is a   UNESCO World Heritage site under the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, the Rajabai Clock Tower remains the premier masterpiece among Indian horological monuments.
