Fortified Legacies: A Comparative Architectural Study of Fort St. George and Fort St. David

The architectural history of the British East India Company on the Coromandel Coast is best defined by two distinct structures: Fort St. George in Madras and Fort St. David in Cuddalore. While both were built to protect British interests from European rivals and local powers, their layouts reveal a fundamental difference in purpose. One was designed as a sprawling administrative capital, while the other was a compact, high-stakes military garrison.

Fort St. George: The Colonial Urban Prototype Established in 1644,

Fort St. George was the first major English settlement in India. Its architectural layout followed the "Fortified Town" model. Facing the Bay of Bengal, the fort featured a semi-elliptical curtain wall system. The interior was meticulously organized into a grid-like "White Town," housing administrative buildings, warehouses, and the iconic St. Mary’s Church.1 The defense system relied on massive, rounded bastions—such as the St. Thomas Bastion—positioned to provide overlapping fields of fire for heavy artillery. Its design emphasized longevity and civil governance, serving as the nerve center for British diplomacy and trade in the East.

Fort St. David: The Vauban Military Bastion:  In contrast, Fort St. David (acquired in 1690) was built with a sense of urgency. Located near the French stronghold of Pondicherry, its architecture was dictated by the tactical necessity of the Vauban style, a French-inspired system of fortification. The layout was a compact trapezoid, strategically placed at the confluence of the Gadilam River and the sea. Rather than a sprawling town, it featured aggressive defensive elements like "hornworks"—outward-facing V-shaped extensions designed to trap and funnel attacking infantry.

After 1725 the strengthened fort played a crucial role and became the center of numerous battles with French forces in 1746.The British successfully thwarted the French attacks it became the British headquarters for the southern India............

He is known for naval exploits against the pirate Edward England and for reforming the administration of Madras Presidency and Ft.David, Cuddalore......

Its most distinctive features were its deep water-filled moats and a network of subterranean tunnels for the secure movement of gunpowder, reflecting its role as a front-line military outpost.

Strategic Differences:

The divergence in their layouts is stark:

Madras was built for presence and administration, utilizing wide streets and central citadels, whereas Cuddalore was built for survival and tactical advantage, utilizing riverine defense and complex exterior earthworks.

Preservation Status of Fort St. George

The Secretariat and St. Mary’s Church (2025)

As of late 2025, the Fort St. George complex in Chennai remains a focal point of intense heritage conservation debates. While it continues to serve as the administrative heart of the Tamil Nadu government, the dual pressures of modern governance and environmental decay have made the preservation of its two most iconic structures—the Secretariat and St. Mary’s Church—a challenging endeavor.

The Secretariat: Balancing Power and Heritage

The Secretariat, which incorporates the historic Fort House, has seen significant intervention in 2025. Following a structural audit by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in early 2024, the building underwent a massive lime-plaster restoration to address the peeling masonry caused by the saline sea air. By late 2025, modern office encroachments—such as heavy air conditioning units and haphazard electrical wiring—were largely reorganized to reduce the structural load on the 17th-century foundations.

However, heritage activists continue to advocate for the complete relocation of government offices to a new "Global City" administrative hub, arguing that the constant footfall of thousands of officials is detrimental to the building's long-term survival.

St. Mary’s Church: The "Westminster Abbey of the East"St. Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican church east of the Suez, is currently in a state of excellent preservation compared to other fort structures.1 In mid-2025, the ASI completed a specialized project to restore the unique bomb-proof vaulted roof, which was designed to withstand 18th-century sieges. The church’s internal treasures, including the 17th-century silver communion vessels and the famous "Last Supper" painting, are now housed in climate-controlled displays.

A major focus in 2025 has been the preservation of the tombstones in the courtyard; a digital mapping project was concluded in November, allowing visitors to scan QR codes to read the histories of the pioneers buried there, including those of Elihu Yale’s family.
