Bathukamma, meaning "Mother Come Back to Life", is a grand regional floral festival celebrated predominantly across Telangana and northern regions of Andhra Pradesh. Falling during the monsoon-to-winter transition in the sacred Hindu month of Ashwayuja, the festival honors Goddess Gauri as the embodiment of life, nature, and maternal protection.   In October 2026, Bathukamma spans nine distinct days, beginning on Saturday, October 10 (Engili Pula Bathukamma) and culminating in grand immersion celebrations on Sunday, October 18 (Saddula Bathukamma).

Apart from temple rituals, the tradition of Bathukamma Panduga (festival of life) is celebrated predominantly by women. This is a floral festival associated with Navaratri, showcasing the unique cultural ethos of the state.

Bathukamma means  ‘come back to life mother’ and is asking Goddess Sati to return'. Interesting feature of this festival is the idol of  deity  Bathukamma  made of  flowers during the festival  is ceremoniously and reverentially  immersed in water on the final day of the festivities.

 Mythological Origins and Cultural Meaning

The festival is grounded in rich regional mythologies centered on female strength, resilience, and divine grace:   Reincarnation of Goddess Sati: The primary invocation asks Goddess Sati—who sacrificed herself in the sacred pyre—to return to life. According to regional lore, Sati reincarnated as Goddess Parvati, making the celebration a tribute to divine rebirth and feminine power.

Durga’s Tears and Mahishasura Fall:

Another belief holds that Goddess Durga wept for nine straight days upon witnessing the immense suffering of humanity caused by the buffalo demon Mahishasura. On the tenth day (Vijayadashami), she slew the demon. Bathukamma commemorates those nine days spent by the Mother Goddess sharing in the sorrow of her devotees before achieving victory.

The Princess Born of Prayers:

Regional folklore recounts the story of King Dharmangada and Queen Satyavati of the Chola dynasty, who lost 100 sons on the battlefield. Through deep devotion, they prayed to Goddess Lakshmi to be born as their daughter. When she took birth in their royal palace, visiting sages bestowed their blessings, chanting "Bathukamma" ("Live Forever").

Ritual Practices and Environmental Symbiosis

Unlike most temple-centric festivals, Bathukamma is a decentralized, eco-friendly tradition led entirely by women.   Aspect Description

Floral Towers: Women collect native seasonal wildflowers—such as Tangedu (cassia), Gunugu (celosia), Gummadi (pumpkin flowers), and Banti (marigold). These are layered concentrically on a wooden plank, forming a conical structure resembling a temple Gopuram.

Gauramma Idol: A small conical idol made of pure turmeric, called Gauramma, is placed atop the floral mountain to represent Goddess Gauri.

Community Circles: In the evening, women wear traditional attire, place their floral stacks together, and circle them in rhythmic song and step, chanting folk songs that pass cultural heritage across generations.

Water Immersion  On the final day (Saddula Bathukamma), women carry the floral structures in grand processions (Jataras) to local water bodies for immersion, returning the wild blooms back to nature.Bathukamma serves a dual purpose: young girls pray for ideal life partners and learn domestic wisdom, while married women seek health, prosperity, and long life for their families.

The Telangana Tourism Department organised ‘Atukula Bathukamma’ celebrations at Lalitha Kala Thoranam in Hyderabad on Sunday, October 11, showcasing the State’s cultural heritage and traditional art forms.Atukula Bathukamma
