The history of Bellary Fort is marked by transitions across several ruling dynasties. The origin of the fortress dates back to the 16th century, during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. Hanumappa Nayaka, a feudatory chieftain, constructed the Upper Fort atop the hill, establishing it as a secure citadel and the official seat of the Hande family. Following the collapse of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565, the region endured severe political instability. Control shifted among regional rulers, including the Bijapur Sultans and the Maratha king Shivaji, who captured the fort in 1678 before restoring it in exchange for tribute.

In the late 18th century, Hyder Ali of Mysore seized the region. Recognizing the strategic value of the location, he expanded the stronghold by building the Lower Fort at the base of the hill and overhauling the existing upper defenses. After the death of Tipu Sultan in 1799 during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the territory passed to the Nizam of Hyderabad and was subsequently ceded to the British East India Company in 1800 under the Subsidiary Alliance. Under British administration, Bellary was designated a primary cantonment town within the Madras Presidency.
Architecture
Architecturally, Bellary Fort is a hybrid structure divided into two distinct parts:
The Upper Fort (Citadel): Built at an elevation of 1,976 feet (602 m) above sea level, the Upper Fort is a quadrangular citadel with a circumference of roughly 2.4 kilometers. Designed as an impregnable refuge, its access is restricted to a narrow, winding pathway cut through massive granite boulders. It features a three-tier defense system along with deep cisterns excavated directly into the natural rock clefts, ensuring a continuous supply of water during prolonged sieges. The Lower Fort (Face Hill): Encircling the eastern base of the hill,

The Lower Fort spans approximately 0.8 kilometers i n diameter. Designed by a French engineer hired by Hyder Ali, it was built using 18th-century European military concepts, featuring high stone bastions, a deep surrounding moat, and an outer glacis intended to deflect incoming artillery fire.
A well-known historical legend surrounds the construction of the Lower Fort. Upon its completion, Hyder Ali realized that the new structure was built at a lower elevation than the adjacent Kumbara Gudda hill, leaving the fortress exposed to enemy artillery from above. Enraged by this critical strategic oversight, Hyder Ali allegedly ordered the execution of the French engineer. Today, a grave dated 1769 near the fort's eastern gate marks the engineer's final resting place, preserved over the generations by local tradition.
Present Status
In the present day, Bellary Fort is preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). While the area surrounding the lower fort was developed during the British era to house administrative offices, educational institutions, and public buildings, the upper citadel remains a quiet historical site. Illuminated on Sundays and public holidays, the fort remains a central symbol of Bellary’s rich heritage, drawing visitors to explore its ancient ramparts, rock-cut reservoirs, and panoramic views of the city.
