The history of Fredy’s Bungalow is deeply tied to the fascinating life of Frederick Smetacek Sr., a German enthusiast and nature lover who fled Nazi-occupied Europe and arrived in India in 1939. After moving up from Calcutta, Smetacek chose the tranquil hills of the Kumaon region to settle down with his wife and raise their family.

Over the decades, Fredy became renowned across India and internationally for his deep passion for lepidopterology (the study of butterflies and moths). His estate became an ecological haven where he collected and cataloged thousands of insect specimens, cementing the estate’s reputation as a prime hub for bird-watching and butterfly appreciation.
Architectural Characteristics
Fredy’s Bungalow is designed in classic colonial country estate architecture, recalling traditional English hill cottages.
Exterior Structure: The bungalow features heavy, imposing exterior stone walls built to withstand the mountain climate, capped by sloped roofs designed for heavy monsoon runoff.
Interior Layout: Inside, warm wood dominates the aesthetic. The central living space boasts double-height wooden ceilings, large glass windows admitting soft natural light, and a central fireplace fitted with a classic Franklin stove. An elegant wooden staircase leads to upper level accommodations.

Today, Fredy’s Bungalow operates as an exclusive 4-bedroom boutique homestay managed under Itmenaan Lodges. The structure has been carefully restored to retain its period features, polished hardwood floors, and vintage furniture while providing modern comforts.
The four guest rooms—often referred to as "Butterfly Rooms"—offer views of the gardens and forest canopy. Guests wake to the songs of the resident whistling thrush and spend evenings amidst the flickering fires or observing rare native butterflies in the estate gardens.
