Introduction and Purpose of Construction
The princely state of Jodhpur in Northern India has long been celebrated for its architectural marvels, transitioning from the formidable security of Mehrangarh Fort to grand, elegant palatial residences. Built in 1927, the Ajit Bhawan Palace stands as a magnificent testament to this royal evolution. The estate was commissioned by Maharaj Ajit Singh, the younger brother of Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur. Serving as the influential Prime Minister of the state, Maharaj Ajit Singh built the palace to serve as his private, stately residence. It was designed to mirror the opulent lifestyle and high status of the Marwar royalty while offering a slightly more intimate, comfortable home compared to the colossal, neighboring Umaid Bhawan Palace being built by his brother around the same time.

Architecturally, the palace beautifully blends traditional British-Indian sensibilities, having been designed by a talented English architect who understood regional needs. The structure was crafted using locally quarried Jodhpur red sandstone, which radiates a deep, regal warmth. Spread across 20,500 square meters (approximately 5 acres) amidst the arid Thar Desert, the property features a classic two-floor layout flanked by lush, well-kept gardens.

The internal layout deeply honors historical societal structures, particularly the Zenana (the secluded women's quarters) located on the first floor. This section was completely self-contained, utilizing intricate latticed windows (jharokhas) that allowed royal women to observe the outside world without being seen. To ensure absolute privacy, the entryways were heavily guarded by well-trained soldiers and sturdy eunuchs, preventing men from loitering. The palace design seamlessly accommodated royal daily life; a grand stairway led down to the "Lady's Porch," which featured massive swinging doors where an alarm would sound, allowing the Rani’s automobile to park for direct, private access.
The exterior grounds were highly functional as well. A massive central courtyard was utilized by the rulers to hold audiences with local dignitaries and villagers, establishing a close rapport with the public. The estate also featured a large orchard on the front-left quadrant, while the right side formed a self-sufficient ecosystem containing a temple, a traditional water well, royal stables, and administrative holding cells.

Present Status and Conservation
Following India's independence and the subsequent abolition of royal privy purses (the government doles), the royal family faced the immense financial burden of maintaining such a massive estate. To preserve their heritage and maintain their comfortable standard of living, the family pioneered a new movement by converting Ajit Bhawan into Jodhpur's very first heritage hotel.
Today, the palace operates as a highly successful luxury heritage resort. Conservation efforts have been meticulously executed to protect the authentic Rajput interiors, ancient stone latticework, and interconnected historical staircases. By blending these strictly guarded traditional structures with cutting-edge modern amenities—such as an expansive outdoor pool and fine-dining restaurants—the property survives as a vibrant, living museum. Conveniently located just a few kilometers from local hubs like the Jodhpur Airport and Railway Station, it allows modern travelers to experience a bygone era of royal hospitality while ensuring the architectural legacy of Maharaj Ajit Singh remains beautifully preserved.
Ajit Bhawan is located 2 km from the Jodhpur Airport, 3 km from the Railway Station and 5 km from the Jodhpur Bus Stand.
