Introduction and Historical Background

The Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent emerged as a vital hub for Western mercantile traders following Vasco da Gama’s historic discovery of the sea route to India in 1498. By 1512–1513, Portuguese traders had established their initial contact with Bengal, preceding the British East India Company’s settlement of Calcutta’s fishing villages under Job Charnock in 1686. Alongside these early Portuguese merchants came Christian missionaries eager to spread the Gospel. Though faced with deep-rooted local religious philosophies and severe language barriers, these missionaries established institutions that served both local converts and European settlers.

Among the lasting legacies of this era is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located on Lenin Sarani (formerly Dhurrumtollah Street) in Dharmatala, Kolkata. Founded in 1832, the church owes its existence to a maternal vow. Pascoe Barretto de Souza, a matriarch of the prominent Portuguese Barretto family and grandmother of Sir Walter de Souza (later the Consul General of Portugal in Calcutta), faced a family crisis in 1821 when her son was tried for shooting and injuring a man named Joseph Gonsalves near the old Chowringhee Theatre. She vowed to build a church if her son was acquitted. Upon his acquittal, she fulfilled her promise. Following the passage of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829, construction commenced behind the Dharmatala Bazaar, and the church was completed between 1832 and 1834.

Originally established as a Roman Catholic sanctuary catering specifically to the affluent Portuguese Catholic community in Calcutta, the church initially operated under the Padroado (the Portuguese crown's ecclesiastical patronage) until 1844. As the demographics of Calcutta shifted during the British Raj, the church evolved from an exclusive Portuguese enclave into a diverse urban parish. It welcomed an expanding congregation of Anglo-Indians, native converts, and European officials, embedding itself deeply within the socio-religious fabric of downtown Calcutta.

The structure features an elegant steeple and belfry that became a prominent landmark in the 1848 colored lithographs by Sir Charles D’Oyly. Inside, the church boasts a spacious nave flanked by tall aisles, high ceilings designed for natural ventilation, and an ornate main altar dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The interior is decorated with vintage wooden pews, classical molding, and historic tablets that trace the genealogy and contributions of the founding Barretto de Souza family.

Present Status and Conservation

Today, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands as one of the oldest active Catholic institutions in Kolkata. Situated in a bustling, high-traffic commercial zone of modern Kolkata, it continues to hold regular services for a vibrant local parish.

However, its age and urban environment pose severe conservation challenges. Vibrations from heavy traffic, environmental pollution, and moisture ingress during the monsoons threaten its brickwork and historic plaster. Conservation efforts, spearheaded by the Archdiocese of Calcutta and local heritage enthusiasts, focus on structural stabilization, waterproofing, and restoring the delicate neoclassical details of its façade. Preserving this historic landmark is vital to ensuring that Calcutta’s rich, multi-layered colonial and Portuguese heritage survives for future generations.
