Across South India, the auspicious festival of Vijayadashami—the culminating tenth day of Navaratri—is marked by a deeply cherished tradition known as Vidyarambham (Vidya meaning "knowledge" and Arambham meaning "beginning"). Also referred to as Akshara Abhyasam, Ezhuthiniruthu, or Mudhal Ezhuthu, this ancient rite of passage marks a young child's formal initiation into the world of letters, arts, literature, and divine wisdom.

Education and the pursuit of truth have held an exalted status in Indian philosophy for centuries. Vidyarambham symbolizes the transition of a child—typically between ages three and five—from early childhood into structured intellectual and creative growth. The ritual invokes Goddess Saraswati (the deity of learning and arts), Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles), and Lord Vishnu to ensure an unobstructed, fruitful journey through life.
The preceding day, Mahanavami, involves Pooja Veppu, where students, artisans, and scholars place their books, musical instruments, and tools at altars to receive divine blessings. On Vijayadashami, during Pooja Eduppu, these objects are reclaimed, signaling the resumption of learning through Vidyarambham.

The Sacred Ritual and Symbolism
Whether held at home, in schools, or within revered temples, the ritual follows a timeless sequence guided by a guru, elder, or priest:
Writing on Rice: The child is seated on the guru's lap. The guru holds the child's index finger to trace the sacred invocation—"Om Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah"—on a tray of raw rice or sand. Writing on rice symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge yielding prosperity and nourishment.
Inscribing on the Tongue: The guru then writes the same sacred mantra on the child's tongue using a golden ring or stylus dipped in honey. This symbolic act invokes divine blessings for sweetness of speech, eloquence, and intellectual clarity.
Gurudakshina: The ceremony concludes with the offering of Gurudakshina (traditional tokens of respect like betel leaves, areca nuts, fruits, and cloth) to the teacher, reinforcing humility and reverence for the preceptor.
Pooja Veppu (Mahanavami: Books and tools placed at Goddess Saraswati's altar
Pooja Eduppu (Vijayadashami): Sacred retrieval of books and initiation into letters.
