Nestled at an altitude of 1,750 meters amidst 139 acres of pine, deodar, and conifer forests in Himachal Pradesh, The Lawrence School, Sanawar stands as one of the most enduring educational institutions of colonial India. Founded on April 15, 1847, by Sir Henry Lawrence and his wife Lady Honoria Lawrence, Sanawar holds the distinction of being widely recognized as the world’s first co-educational boarding school. the Sanawar campus cover 139 acres of wooded land. The Chapel, it is said to be the oldest existing colonial structure that came up in 1853 on the campus, was meant to serve the spiritual needs of the historic boarding school which was primarily for the British and Angelo Indians. Impressive features of the old Chapel are beautiful stained glass windows and historic layout. Incidentally, Porch came up as addition in the memory of the Founder by Col. Herbert Edwardes in 1858.

Origins and Foundation
The school's humble beginning saw a pioneer group of 14 boys and girls pitching canvas tents atop a rugged Himalayan ridge. Waiting anxiously under canvas for the first stone structures to take shape before the arrival of the summer monsoons, those children laid the groundwork for an elite academic sanctuary. Initially established as a military asylum for the orphans and children of British soldiers serving in India, the institution expanded rapidly. By 1853, the student body had grown to 195 pupils, prompting significant royal recognition.

That same year, Sanawar was presented with the King’s Colours—becoming one of only six educational institutions across the entire British Empire to receive this prestigious honor, alongside the likes of Eton College, Shrewsbury, Cheltenham, the Duke of York's Royal Military School, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In 1857, the school was taken over directly by the British Crown, and to this day, it holds the record for keeping its Colours for the longest unbroken period in history.
