India’s journey as a free nation began on August 15, 1947, when it attained independence from British rule. However, true self-governance took concrete shape on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force. On this historic day, India formally declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic, Republic, marking the birth of the Republic of India. Since then, January 26 has been celebrated annually as Republic Day, a national holiday symbolising constitutional supremacy and democratic values.
The adoption of the Constitution was a defining moment in India’s history. Drafted under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the Constitution laid down the framework for governance, guaranteed fundamental rights, and ensured equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity for all citizens. It empowered the people of India to choose their own representatives, thus establishing a democratic system rooted in the will of the masses. With its enforcement, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took oath as the first President of India, becoming the constitutional head of the newly formed Republic.
The historic inauguration of the Republic was marked by a 21-gun salute and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by President Rajendra Prasad, symbolising India’s complete political sovereignty. Over the decades, Republic Day has evolved into a grand celebration of India’s unity in diversity, military strength, cultural heritage, and democratic ethos.
Each year, the Republic Day Parade held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi is the highlight of the celebrations. The President of India unfurls the Tricolour and takes the salute, while the Prime Minister pays homage to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial. Present alongside the PM was the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Chief of Defence Services General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal APS Singh, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi. The parade showcases the prowess of the armed forces, tableaux from various states and Union Territories, and vibrant cultural performances that reflect India’s rich traditions.
In 2026, India celebrates its 77th Republic Day, commemorating 77 years since the Constitution came into effect. Though some confusion arises regarding the count, 1950 is considered the first Republic Day, making 2026 the 77th observance. Republic Day stands not merely as a ceremonial event but as a reminder of India’s constitutional ideals, democratic spirit, and collective responsibility to uphold the values enshrined in its Constitution.
