The Kali Bari Temple in Shimla, located about 1.5 km from the Shimla Railway Station and a kilometre from the Old Bus Stand, is one of the hill station’s oldest and most revered shrines. Perched on the western side of Jakhu Hill, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, worshipped locally as Shyamala. Many historians believe that Shimla (earlier Shimla) derived its name from this form of the goddess. The temple was originally established in 1845 by a Bengali Brahmin, Ram Charan Brahmachari, who chose a site on Jakhu Hill for the shrine. Later, during the British period, the temple was shifted to its present location to make space for colonial construction on Jakhu Hill.
