Founded in 1832 by Scottish missionary Rev. John Wilson, Wilson College in Mumbai stands as one of India’s oldest and most respected institutions of higher learning. Its establishment predates the University of Mumbai, to which it remains affiliated, by 25 years. In recognition of its academic excellence, Wilson College was granted autonomous status by the University of Mumbai in November 2021. The college had earlier received an ‘A’ grade accreditation from NAAC in 2005.

Located at Girgaon Chowpatty, the college’s iconic heritage building, completed in 1889, was designed by architect John Adams in the domestic Victorian Gothic style. It is classified as a Grade III heritage structure. The structure features Minton-tiled verandahs, ornate teakwood staircases, mosaic floors, a renaissance-style marble courtyard fountain, and a chapel with original lamp fittings and stained-glass windows. The college library, established in 1832, boasts over 73,000 books, including rare works such as a 1610 edition of the Holy Bible and Newton's Principia commentary. It also provides digital access through N-LIST and has microfilms of rare Gujarati texts.

Wilson College offers a range of aided and self-financed undergraduate and junior college programs in Arts, Science, Mass Media, Management Studies, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Computer Science. The library and science laboratories are well-equipped, catering to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, including those pursuing Ph.D. research.

The college hosts three hostels: St. Andrew’s House (for boys, est. 1961), Mackichan Hall (named after former principal Dr. Digold Mackichan), and Pandita Ramabai Hostel (PRH, for girls, est. 1932). Each has a rich culture of student engagement, including annual events like Sandathon and Fresher’s Night.

A Christian minority institution managed by the John Wilson Education Society since 1963, Wilson College is deeply rooted in values of inclusivity, service, and academic integrity. Its motto, "Fides, Spes, Caritas" (Faith, Hope, Charity), continues to guide its mission of nurturing intellectual and moral excellence. With a blend of heritage architecture and contemporary education, Wilson College remains a pillar of Mumbai’s academic and cultural landscape.
