Origins: A Vision for Public Health
The King's Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research was formally established on November 7, 1899, though its origins can be traced back to earlier initiatives. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel W.G. King, who served as the Sanitary Commissioner of the Madras Presidency. King was a pioneer in public health, advocating for compulsory technical training for sanitary inspectors and introducing significant plague and cholera prevention measures in Madras.
The institute's initial aim was to combat widespread infections by focusing on preventive medicine. It began as a vaccine depot, primarily supplying smallpox vaccine lymph throughout the Madras Presidency under King's supervision in the 1890s. By its official inauguration in November 1905 by Governor Lord Ampthill, it had grown into a comprehensive provincial facility. It housed a well-equipped bacteriological laboratory and a public health laboratory, in addition to its original vaccine production unit. The institute's growth and reputation for excellence were largely attributed to King's visionary contributions.
Throughout its history, the King's Institute has been at the forefront of medical advancements. During World War I, it supplied large quantities of vaccine lymph to allied forces. In 1919, it made history by manufacturing anti-influenza vaccine on a large scale for the first time in India to meet civil and military demands. It played a crucial role in the eradication of smallpox and polio from the country and continues to be a state apex referral center for various bacterial and viral diseases, involved in vaccine production, diagnostic services, drug testing, and research.
