In 1915, amidst the First World War, France launched a recruitment drive across its colonies, including its Indian territories. Then-Governor Alfred Martineau urged Indian citizens to support France, stating that those who fought for France would be regarded as her own children. As a result, 800 recruits came forward from Pondicherry, of whom 500 were deployed to combat zones and 75 died during the war.
To honor their sacrifice, the memorial was constructed in 1937 and inaugurated on 3 April 1938 by Governor Crocicchia. Designed by sculptor Gaston Petit and architect Delafon, the structure received a government subsidy and remains French property even today. The initial bronze plaque listed the names of those who perished in World War I, but later plaques commemorated soldiers from World War II, the Indochina War, and the Algerian War, highlighting the broader participation of French Indian soldiers in 20th-century conflicts.
Each year, the memorial is illuminated on Bastille Day (14 July) and commemorated on Armistice Day (11 November) with ceremonies involving students, diplomats, and French officials. A “Defense and Citizenship Day” is also observed, fostering awareness of French civic values among the youth of Pondicherry, especially those studying at Lycée français de Pondichéry.
The monument not only honors the fallen but also symbolizes the enduring Franco-Indian historical ties, particularly the loyalty and sacrifice of French India during global conflicts.
