Initially founded as a government school under the liberal administration of Sir Charles Metcalfe, then Lieutenant Governor of the North-Western Provinces, the institution was upgraded to a Government College in 1850 with Mr. Vernon Tregear as its first principal. It had 57 students in its early collegiate phase. The college played a significant role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Several students and teachers participated in the uprising, and the then-principal was killed by rebels. The college was closed during this turbulent period, and its buildings were used as the headquarters for the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment. A portion also functioned as a temporary judge’s court.
