Narendra Nath Mohan was the founder of Solan-based brewery, Dyer Meakin Breweries  which he purchased in 1949 from the Dyer family after India's independence in August 1947. N.N. Mohan's company was listed  on the London Stock Exchange in 1949.  Incorporated in 1855 (but established much earlier) by Edward Dyer (father of Murderer and Jallianwalla fame brig gen. Reginald Dyer) at Kasauli in the sub Himalayan Mountains in India under the name Dyer Breweries, now called  Mohan Meakin is a large group of companies which started with Asia's first brewery. Its famous beer known as Lion beer was not only popular in the subcontinent but also in many parts of the world. The credit goes to Edward Dyer who put in lots of hard work and  made his brewery a successful operation during the colonial period. His patrons mostly included to[p British officials and European soldiers in the British garrisons across India.

Do you ever have an idea how Dyer breweries Company  came to be called Mohan Meakin Breweries?  India' s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on an official visit to to Shimla in 1960.  Keenly interested in developing business opportunities in India, Pandit Nehru was particular about visiting industries in that region . Somebody advised him to visit  the Solan based brewery. Upon hearing this suggestion Nehru refused to visit the brewery for the simple reason the company was named after  Edward Dyer, whose son General Reginald Edward Dyer was associated with the gruesome Jallianwala Bagh massacre committed on the 13th of April 1919 (exactly 101 years from today).
“The refusal of PM Nehru served as the compelling reason to remove Dyer’s name,” recalls Lt Gen Pradeep Khanna (retd), whose father, Krishan Gopal Khanna, was the Financial Director with the company from 1959 to 1975''.

By setting up the oldest brewery in Asia in this region Edward Dyer gave an impetus to industrialization in this part of the Himalayan region.  It was followed by another entrepreneur, HG Meakin, coming from a well-known brewing family of Burton-on-Trent, founded Meakin & Co. Ltd.  Meakin, moved to India and in 1887 bought the old Shimla and Solan Breweries from Edward Dyer.  They joined hands to form Dyer Meakin & Co Ltd.  Post World War 1, the Meakin and Dyer breweries were merged, restructured and made into a public company on the London Stock Exchange.  After independence, this brewery provided jobs to more than 200 people, old timers recall. The company’s  new boss Kapil Mohan introduced Old Monk rum  that  became a coveted global brand well known for its peculiar flavor  smokey taste since it was manufactured from the spring water of Solan, which was ideally suited for brewing.  ''Old Monk'' was the third largest selling rum in the world.   Old Monk is a vatted Indian rum, blended and aged for 7 years (though there is also more expensive, 12-year-old version). It is dark, with an alcohol content of 42.8 (army issue alcohol content is 50%). It is produced by Mohan Meakin, based in Mohan Nagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.The quality liquor produced  here has gained  special name  for its taste.

Narendra Nath Mohan expanded his company operations  and set up an industrial hub near Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh known as Mohan Nagar by establishing various manufacturing units. He died at the ripe age above 80.   The company diversified into different products - cereals, fruit juices, mineral water, etc. Today, Mohan Meakin produces a variety of alcohols including Old Monk, Golden Eagle Beer, Diplomat Deluxe, Colonel's Special, Black Knight, Meakin 10,000, Summer Hall and Solan No. 1 whiskies, London Dry and Big Ben gins, and Kaplanski vodka. In January 2018 Kapil Mohan as Chief Executive of MML passed away handing over the mantle to his nephews Hemant and Vinay.
