This several centuries old network of tunnels is an engineering marvel that facilitated water supply to the city. The name 'Khooni Bhandara' means 'Bloody Canal', a moniker that belies its peaceful purpose and possibly refers to the challenging conditions under which it was constructed. Utilizing gravity for easy downwad water flow, it showcases advanced hydrological and architectural knowledge of the time. Despite its age, much of the system remains functional today. In the Kundi Bhandara area there were 101 kundis, presently,it is reported, only 31 are left and all are functional.
Constructed in 1615 by Abdul Rahim Khankhana, the Subedar of Burhanpur during the reign of Akbar and Jahangir, this historical welfare oriented water supply system, covers roughly an area of 0.340 hectares. Known for its unique features and structural perfection, the carefully planned structure has several small ponds that were built in various parts to collect water. The water was transported to the pond at Shaniwara Dwar in Burhanpur city through an underground tunnel with sufficient gradient, built with limestone at a depth of 80 or 100 feet below the ground. The water from this pond was then supplied to the palaces, Masjids, residences of common people ,etc using underground pipes.

About this unique underground water management structure in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, way back in 2017 the state was keen to get the tag of UNESCO world heritage site and made a case for it with the Central government. Khooni Bhandara is a carefully built network of Kundis (well-like structures), which are inter-connected through an underground tunnel that allows a smooth flow of water through the channel from the first to the last Kundi, based on the law of gravity. To go down to reach the underground tunnel, an iron stairs or rope is used. This shows the ingenuity of the Mogul era water management system to make comfortable water supply for public purpose. Amazingly, despite its long age, much of the water system is functional as of to day. Now, it has become a tourist spot for those who look for something unique and inspiring.
