Historical Origins and the Legend of Konda Reddy
The origins of the fort trace back to the 12th century, when Kurnool served as a vital transit point for crossing the Tungabhadra River. However, the formal construction of the initial fort took place between 1530 and 1542 CE under the reign of Achyuta Devaraya, the successor of the legendary Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire. In the 17th century, the fort saw further enhancements, including the construction of grand gateways by Gopala Raja, the grandson of Rama Raya.
The fort derives its popular name from Konda Reddy, the last ruler of Alampur. In the 17th century, Konda Reddy was imprisoned within these walls by the Nawab of Kurnool. Local folklore recounts a daring escape where the ruler used a secret network of underground tunnels to flee his captors. Although he eventually lost his territory to the Golconda Nawabs, his spirit of resistance left an indelible mark on the citadel, leading the people to name the bastion in his honor.
