Dharmrajeshwar is an ancient Buddhist Site of 4th - 5th century in Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, India . It is an example of indian rock- cut architecture situated in Garoth  at a distance of 4 km from Chhindwara town and 106 km from Mandsaur city. Nearest railway station is Shamgarh about 22 km. Its original name is Dhamnar. There are numerous Buddhist caves as many as 170 small ones and a Hindu temple complex. Some of the caves include secluded and not ornamented spaces for monks. The complex is a monolithic structure measuring 50 meter long, 20meter wide and 9 meter deep in a rock hill surrounded by seven small temples. The complex  has well-preserved Buddhist caves and a Hindu shrine and  is somewhat similar to Maharashtra's rock-cut cultural monuments of Ellora.
The ancient site in Mandsaur District headquartersv(about 22 km from Shamgarh tehsil) is in the midst of a forest upto 3 km Just like Kailashnath temple in Ellora , the Dharmrajeshwar temple is also carved out of a hill from top to down. It is 9 metres below the ground, according to the ASI.

On the first floor, according to the ASI experts, caves were made by cutting stones for monks to meditate. Historians believe that the Dhammar caves are based on the Buddhist philosophy and have a deep connection with the temple. However, the Buddhist monastery was first  converted into a Vishnu temple and later into a Shiva temple in the later periods.

Dating back to 5th century, how  the Buddhist place of worshp in the beginning had  fiirst become a Vishnu temple and later a Shiva temple is a subject of discussion.  Surprisingly the sanctum of  the main temple has a Shiva linga with a statue of Vishnu (Harhara), a feature unknown in south Indian Hindu temples. The main shrine is surrounded by 7  smaller  temples.  There are carved images of Mahavishnu and goddess Lakshmi at the entrance gate. This heritage site is worth a visit
