Nestled in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvithamcode Arappally—also known as Thomaiyar Kovil or Amalagiri Church—stands as a monumental testament to the dawn of Christianity in South India. Historically part of the princely state of Travancore, this historic sanctuary is believed to have been founded in 63 AD by St. Thomas the Apostle, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. Recognized by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and architectural historians alike, it is widely considered one of the oldest surviving church structures in the world where daily prayers are still conducted.

History and Cultural Origins
According to Christian tradition in South India, St. Thomas landed at the ancient port of Muziris (in modern Kerala) in 52 AD. During his evangelical mission across the Malabar Coast and the southern tip of the peninsula, he established seven major churches and one royal half-church, collectively remembered as the Ezhara Pallikal ("Seven and a Half Churches"). Thiruvithamcode Arappally is revered as the Arappally ("Half Church") in this historic tradition.

The land for the church was granted by the early Chera dynasty ruler King Uthiyan Cheralathan, who named the hillock site Amalagiri. Over the centuries, the local population affectionately named it Thomaiyar Kovil (the Church of St. Thomas).
Architectural Synthesis and Craftsmanship
Thiruvithamcode Arappally represents a unique fusion of early indigenous South Indian temple architecture and traditional Syrian Christian liturgical layout:

Granite Masonry: Built entirely of heavy dressed granite blocks without mortar, the structure features thick stone walls designed to withstand centuries of tropical weather.
Gabled Roof Structure: The church is capped by a tiled, steeply pitched gabled roof supported by heavy timber beams, characteristic of traditional Kerala and Venad architecture built to shed heavy monsoon downpours.
Indigenous Iconography: The outer facade and entrance portico feature traditional stone carvings, including a carved cross surrounded by native floral motifs atop a lotus pedestal, illustrating an early synthesis between Indian artistic traditions and Christian iconography.
Interior Sanctuary: The layout consists of three distinct functional spaces—the mukha mandapam (entrance porch), the haikkala (nave for worshippers), and the madbaha (holy sanctuary containing the altar).

Despite its age spanning nearly two millennia, the church remains an active place of daily worship where ancient Syriac-Malayalam liturgical traditions are preserved. Recent conservation efforts, conducted in consultation with heritage architects, focus on preserving the original stone masonry, repairing timber roof trusses, and protecting the surrounding eco-sensitive grounds from modern commercial development. In the 16th century foreign explorers built the church using granite block without disturbing the heritage values. The unique feature is the church retains the traditional Hindu temple aesthetics.Carefulrenovation of the old church was carried out recently.
