Over decades, this localized mythic dynamic evolved into a organized, highly competitive sport. Participating groups, known as Govinda Pathaks, undergo weeks of rigorous physical training to master balance, coordination, and speed.During the festival, an earthen pot filled with curd, butter, and milk is suspended high above the ground. A Govinda group constructs a multi-tiered pyramid: sturdy, heavy-set participants form a broad base tier, while progressively lighter participants climb above them. The apex tier features a small child who reaches the pot, shatters it, and spills the contents over the team while cheering crowds splash water to challenge their concentration.

Commercialization, Safety, and Regulations
In recent years, political sponsorship and substantial cash rewards elevated Dahi Handi into a multi-lakh-rupee enterprise. Pyramids climbed as high as nine tiers—equivalent to a nine-story building—without safety harnesses, leading to hundreds of severe injuries annually.
