By mid-1942, India was engulfed in geopolitical and economic turmoil due to World War II. The failure of the Cripps Mission in March 1942—which offered only limited dominion status post-war without immediate power-sharing—deepened nationalist frustration. Simultaneously, rising wartime inflation and the threat of a Japanese invasion along the eastern border heightened domestic discontent.
On August 8, 1942, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) assembled at the Gowalia Tank Maidan (now August Kranti Maidan) in Bombay. Mahatma Gandhi issued the iconic clarion call to the nation: "Do or Die" (Karo ya Maro). The motion demanded an immediate end to British rule, asserting that India's freedom was vital for both national self-determination and global democracy.
Leadership, Mass Participation, and Resistance
Recognizing the threat of a widespread uprising, the British colonial administration acted swiftly. In the early hours of August 9, 1942, under Operation Zero Hour, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and almost the entire senior leadership of the Indian National Congress were arrested and imprisoned.
Despite the abrupt removal of its leadership, the movement transformed into a spontaneous mass revolution driven by grassroots organizers and young activists:
Underground Leadership: Prominent leaders who evaded arrest, including Aruna Asaf Ali—who heroically hoisted the Indian National Flag at Gowalia Tank Maidan on August 9—Usha Mehta (who operated an underground radio station), Jayaprakash Narayan, and Ram Manohar Lohia, orchestrated covert communications and strikes.
Parallel Governments (Prati Sarkar): In regions like Satara in Maharashtra, Tamluk in Bengal, and Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, local revolutionaries established independent parallel administrative bodies.
Aftermath and Strategic Impact
The colonial administration deployed ruthless military force to suppress the revolt, arresting over 100,000 individuals, imposing heavy collective fines, and firing upon civilian demonstrators. While the British successfully suppressed open protests by late 1943, the movement achieved its primary strategic objective: it made the continued governance of India militarily and economically unviable for the post-war British Empire.
