The Significance of Gopurams

Gopurams, or monumental tower gateways, are quintessential features of Dravidian temple architecture. They serve not only as grand entrances but also as symbolic representations of the journey from the earthly realm to the divine. Adorned with intricate sculptures and carvings depicting deities, legends, and mythological creatures, gopurams are visual narratives that convey spiritual teachings and cultural values.

The Rajagopuram: A Towering Marvel

The most iconic feature of the Srirangam Temple is the towering Rajagopuram, the main entrance on the southern side of the complex. Standing at approximately 73 meters (240 feet) tall with 13 tiers, it is one of the tallest temple towers in Asia. The base of the Rajagopuram was constructed around the 16th century during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. However, the structure remained incomplete for several centuries due to historical upheavals and lack of resources.

In 1987, the Rajagopuram was finally completed under the guidance of the 44th Jeeyar of the Ahobila Mutt, a prominent Sri Vaishnava monastery. The completion was a monumental task that involved intricate craftsmanship and significant financial contributions from devotees worldwide. The Rajagopuram towering presence dominates the skyline and serves as a beacon for pilgrims approaching the sacred site. The TN government, Kanchi Sankarachariyar, Andhra state government, music maestro  Elliyaraja  and others made suitable donations to complete the mammoth project undertaken by octogenarian 44th  Jeeyar Swamigal.

She performed a  mesmerising dance before the commander and his forces to divert their attention and to get gain more time  for Pillai Lokacharya and his entourage  to escape with the idol and be out of reach of the  Muslim army.  After the end of the spell-binding dance, Vellayi took the Commander to the top of the tower promising him  to show him the purported location of the golden idol of Perumal in the temple. On top of the tower, no sooner had he begun  looking down for the spot than she pushed him down off the tower and killed the Army head. To avoid harassment and punishment by the invading army,  she jumped to death from the tower chanting "Narayana'. Hence this tall mangapam in white color is still known as Vellai Gopuram.

Located on the eastern side of the fourth enclosure, Vellai gopuram reaches a height of approximately 44 meters (144 feet) and is renowned for its steep pyramidal structure and ornate carvings in typical Dravidian style of design.
