Pradosham is a highly revered bimonthly occasion in the Hindu calendar, observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing and waning lunar fortnights. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the term "Pradosha" literally signifies the removal of sins or the period just before sunset. It is believed that during this specific twilight window—approximately one and a half hours before and after sunset—Lord Shiva performs the Ananda Tandava (Dance of Joy) on the heights of Mount Kailash to alleviate the suffering of the universe.

In states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Pradosham is celebrated with immense fervor and is considered one of the most powerful times for spiritual cleansing. The popularity stems from the legend of the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean), where Shiva consumed the Halahala poison to save creation. Devotees believe that worshipping Shiva and his mount, Nandi, during this time dissolves negative karma and brings mental peace. In Karnataka, temple rituals often emphasize the "Nandi Puja," as Nandi is the gatekeeper to the divine; in Tamil Nadu, the elaborate Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the deities is a central public spectacle.

Soma Pradosh: March 16, 2026, at Tiruvannamalai
A Pradosham falling on a Monday is known as Soma Pradosh, a rare and exceptionally auspicious alignment since Monday is the day traditionally dedicated to Shiva. On March 16, 2026, the spiritual atmosphere at the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai—representing the Fire element—reaches its zenith.
According to recent religious calendars and local observations, the Pradosha Kaalam on this day is marked by special rituals. The temple witnessed massive gatherings where the massive Nandi statue was bathed in milk, honey, sandalwood paste, and coconut water. Devotees participated in the Pradakshina (circumambulation) of the inner sanctum, seeking the grace of Lord Annamalaiyar. This Soma Pradosh is particularly noted for its "Siva-Shakti" energy, drawing thousands who believe that a single prayer offered during this specific sunset in the shadows of the sacred Annamalai Hill is equivalent to years of penance.
