This fine legacy of colonial Portuguese rule under went renovation in  1954 and prior to it it was in a dilapidated condition facing near collapse.  The reason is soon after the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese in 1954  this place including the historical arch fell into disuse with no periodic repairs and maintenance

The arch memorial was built with particular care in  laterite stone  and green granite adoring the seaward side. Floral designs with the statue of Vasco Da Gama at the center sporting  a deer emblem on the coat of arms are attractive.  His statue is quite impressive and gets the attention of the visitors as he appears in full ceremonial regalia    The simple but sculptural work includes   an image  of  a European woman wearing a crown and a robe, holding a sword in one hand and an open book in the other.
