Great Mogul ruler  Akbar's tomb, built in1604–1613, is  in a vast land comprising 119 acres in Sikandra, a suburb of Agra, Uttar Pradesh.  Located in the western periphery of the city, Akbar chose the site on which he wanted to have his tomb built. He started the construction work and its design is a blend of Hindu, Islamic and European styles. It was Salim (Jahangir) who completed the tomb. The entrance from the road was built to look  like  that of Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. Sikandra is the last resting place of the Mogul emperor  Akbar,  a great lover of  arts, literature and  philosophy.

Raja Ram Jat, a leader of the jats  in order to revenge his father's death revolted against the mogul rule under Aurangzeb and took control of Agra. Further, his rampaging  forces  plundered and  looted  the beautiful tomb, removing  gold, silver jewels, carpets, etc. On top of it, what the Jat  leader did was not a palatable one, he disturbed Akbar's  grave and removed the bones.  On hearing the ransacking of Akbar's tomb, Aurangzeb got wild, finally caught hold of Rajaram Jat and killed him without showing any remorse.  Lord Curzon  top British official (during the Raj), who was  particular about safeguarding old Indian monuments, took serious initiative and and carried out extensive repairs  on Akbar's tomb to bring it back to old glory.
