Standing tall at the heart of the historic city of Bidar, Karnataka, the Chaubara (or Choubara) is a majestic cylindrical watchtower that serves as a silent witness to the region's storied past. As a state-protected monument, it remains one of the most prominent landmarks of the Bahmani era, embodying both the strategic foresight and architectural prowess of the 15th century.

Historical Context

The tower dates back to the Bahmani period, believed to have been commissioned by Ahmad Shah Wali during the mid-1400s as part of the city’s extensive fortifications. Positioned at the exact intersection of Bidar’s two main arterial roads—running North-South and East-West—it functioned as a literal and metaphorical center of the town.

Beyond its role as a watchtower, historians suggest the Chaubara served multiple civic functions. It likely acted as a central tribunal where royal decrees were announced to the public and where punishments for criminals were administered. During the British Raj, a police station was briefly attached to its northern side, though it was later demolished to restore the tower’s original archaeological integrity.

Built as a part of the war strategies of the rulers of the past era.The name Chaubara is of  Persian origin ("Chau" meaning four and "Bara" meaning building or structure) suggesting its four-sided design. Made of locally available  stones, the tall cylinder-shaped tower has  a sold structure that has stood the test of time in this semi arid region............

Architectural Splendor

The Chaubara is a masterpiece of black trap masonry bound with lime mortar. Rising to a height of approximately 71 feet (22 m), the structure is cylindrical and tapers elegantly as it ascends.

The Base: The tower rests on a massive circular plinth with a perimeter of 180 feet. This base features a series of arched niches designed for guards to stand watch or for weary pedestrians to seek shelter from the sun.

The Ascent: An entrance on the eastern side leads to the top of the base. From there, a narrow, winding staircase consisting of eighty steps climbs through the hollow core of the tower.

The Summit: The top of the tower is protected by a 3.5-foot parapet. Four rectangular openings are strategically placed along the shaft to provide light and ventilation to the interior stairs.

Strategic Significance

The name "Chaubara" refers to a building facing four directions. Its height provided the Bahmani sentinels with an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the entire plateau and the surrounding lowlands for several miles. Even today, it offers a panoramic vista of Bidar, bridging the gap between the medieval city and the modern landscape.
