Since December 1534  the seven islands of Bombay (Mumbai) and the close-by  areas had been under the control of Portuguese colonists who were actively involved in the establishment and growth of Roman Catholic  religious Orders in Mumbai.  The Portuguese Franciscans and Jesuits built several churches in the city, Gloria church is one among them. The English who wanted to establish their hegemony in this part of the west coast of India got a break. At last, they  came into possession of the seven islands of Bombay through a marriage treaty on  11 May 1661 with the Portuguese Royal family.  Charles II of England  married Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal. After 1661, several English churches came up especially when Bombay became an important Presidency in British India.

The original Gloria Church, Nossa Senhora da Glória, was built at the foot of the Mazagaon hill. The Portuguese Franciscans took serious efforts to have a church built to spread Christianity there and to attend to the needs of Europeans. The affluent  De Souza e Lima family owned the Mazagaon island which they procured from the King of Portugal in 1572. This family  came forward and funded the church.  The old church was pulled down in 1911 and in its place came up and present one which was opened to public in 1913.

The modern Gloria church was constructed in English Gothic style, shaped in the form of a Latin Cross with tall towers. The four turrets, rising to a height of 160 feet, is quite majestic and  visible in this suburb of Mumbai. It may hurt your neck if you loop up the steeples that seem to penetrate the sky above. This church, made of graystone  is counted as one of beautiful churches  with towering spiresin the state of M
aharastra. Adjacent to the building functions the Antonio D’Souza High School, managed by missionaries attached to Gloria church. This church is worth a visit to get blessed and to enjoy divine ambiance inside.
