The Jaipur Column located in the middle of the courtyard in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Indian president's official residence) in New Delhi, is a monumental column constructed in 1912 by Sri Madho Singh II, the Maharajah of Jaipur. This sponsorship was made by the Maharajah to commemorate the 1911 Delhi Durbar and the shifting of the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi. It was the greatest show on earth during the height of British rule in India under the direction of lord Curzon, then viceroy of India. The rulers of various princely States were in attendance with their respective Rani to greet the royals on that historical occasion.

The column was designed in 1920 by none other than the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens who had already established a name for him. Lutyens submitted his design for the column to the Royal Academy of Arts in London, as part of his diploma work for his election as a fellow of the academy. The work on the structure was completed in 1930. The height of the column is between 145 to 146 feet (correct measurement is not available).

Mostly made of cream sandstone, with red sandstone used for the base.and an egg shaped stuff on top surmounted by a bronze lotus flower and a six-pointed glass star these are held in place by a steel shaft running through the column's entire length.

The bas-reliefs around the base, were designed by the British sculptor Charles Sergeant Jagger who also designed the elephants carved into the walls around the courtyard, as well as the statue of George V, Emperor of India. They formerly stood under the canopy next to India Gate.
