 This temple of great antiquity at Kalahasti near the world famous pilgrimage town of Tirupati (36 kms), Andhra state  is dedicated to Shiva and  is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams - temples celebrating Lord Shiva as the embodiment of the five primary elements. Here Lord Shiva represents  air (in Sanskrit ''Vaayu''  meaning air), the other five temples being Tiruvannamalai (Fire), Chidambaram (Space),Tiruvanaikkaval (Water) and Kanchipuram (Earth) respectively in the state of Tamil Nadu.

It is a matter for astonishment in this temple  in the  main sanctum there is an oil lamp constantly flickering  despite lack of air, and the other oil lamps in the same shrine flicker even after closing the  main door. Flickering suggests some constant air movement.

The inner part of this temple dates back to 5th century built by the Pallava dynasty  and the outer part was constructed  around 12th century by the Chola and the Vijayanagara kings  who made valuable contribution to this temple. Cholas laid the foundation  and the vast west facing Kalahastiswara temple was  built adjoining a hill, and on the banks of the river Swarnamukhi. Kannappa Nayanaar, a hunter and  an ardent devotee of Kalahasteeswarar  once offered his own eyes to the Shivalingam, and for this reason earned the name Kannappan (his original name being Thinnan). Nakkiradevar, Indra, Sri Rama, and others are believed to have worshiped Shiva at this temple.

 This temple  is also associated with Rahu and Ketu, (of the nine grahams or celestial bodies in the Indian astrological scheme), hence it is  Rahu Kethu Kshetra.The following people come here for performing   Rahu – Kethu Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Puja - remedy for their bad period : people whose marriage gets delayed. Couples with no children. People with financial, marital hurdles, etc.  After parikara, their worries get removed. Thousands of devotees all over India and abroad  come here for dosha nivarthi-removal of blemishes.

Aadi Sankara, a great exponent of Hindu philosophy, worshiped at this holy place. Muthuswamy Deekshitar, Cranatic music trinity  sang the glory of this temple in his kriti 'Sree Kaalahasteesa.' Sri Kalahasti Satakam' explains the traditions associated with this temple.
The fifth day of the festival in the month of Maasi coincides with the Maha Shivaratri which occurs in the Tamil month of Maasi (Feb. 15 through March 15) is one of the greatest festival seasons here.
