St. Martha Hospital of Bangaluru city, Karnataka, one of the oldest hospitals in the princely state then was founded by the highly spirited Good Shepard Sisters   in the wake of worst plague that affected a large part of Mysore kingdom. The ruler of Mysore, magnanimous and charitable as he was, helped the Sisters  in the 1870s when the hospital came up. The crux of the problem then was there was no civil hospital in this part to treat the general public.   The colonial ruler had a hospital or two catering to the needs of  army  officers soldiers.  With the cooperation  and concerted efforts of  the  Church, Government and philanthropists, the   civil hospital in Bengaluru  opened its first  ever  outpatient ward on January 1, 1886. Rs 13,000 for the buildings, etc., was raised through public subscription. To run the hospital effectively in the later years  a new building and training school for nurses came up in 1929 and 1933. The old Hospital  building is a protected heritage building.  The  commemorative

Ahead of the World Philatelic Exhibition in January 1989, the Department of Posts brought out two stamps commemorating the Bombay GPO and Bangalore GPO, on October 9, 1988. The latter was first established as The Imperial Post Office in 1800 and was elevated to the status of Head Post Office in 1854. The GPO was functioning in a single story structure  near  Cubbon Park,  and later  it was  replaced with a six-story building , now  a major landmark in Bengaluru.

Giving importance to  old structures with heritage value, the Postal Department of the Govt. of India periodically issues stamps on them. Way back in 1986  the  first day cover of the Kempegowda tower in Basavanagudi was released besides the hospital. Later   stamp commemorating St Joseph's College; United Theological College stamp released in 2001.
