Why Winston Churchill's statues symbolic of British racism need to be pulled down.

Thousands of protestors demonstrated in June 2020 across the UK following the death of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer on  25 May 2020.  His unjustifiable killing has triggered riots worldwide and peaceful protests across the United States which demand an end to police brutality and white supremacy.


On Sunday 7 June, anti-racism protesters in Bristol pulled down the statue of a 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston  rolled down the fallen statue and threw it in the river Avon. This incident  prompted   several other controversial statues across the country to be removed.


In Modern history among  several racist  world politicians like George  Wallace, former Gov. Alabama, USA, Eugene Bull Connor, commissioner of Birmingham, Alabama who had the attack dogs set against the agitating Black Americans,  Enoch Powell Conservative MP of  England  who poured venom on Indians,  the most popular racist  who hogged the limelight  was Winston Churchill,  former Conservative PM who was very much troubled during the second world war.  


Though  Churchill,  served as prime minister of Britain from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955, is  still being  seen as a national hero for his leadership during the Second World War by a large group of people.  They do not realize that   it is just a myth orchestrated by the conservative British society and the media, a publicity gimmick.   Yet another large section of people in England  hold the view that he is a sworn racist,  believing in the supremacy of the British race. 


Countless   evidences  prove  that   Churchill was a white supremacist, besides being India baiter. 


01. He said,  " British imperialism as being the good of the “primitive” and “subject races”.


02. In  1937 Churchill  told the Palestine Royal Commission: “I do not admit, for instance, that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to those people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, or, at any rate, a more worldly wise race, to put it that way, has come in and taken their place.”


 03. As far as India was concerned, Churchill  never made a compromise on his stand  and was  was alone in his firm opposition to Indian Independence. The implication here is he knew vey well that England would lose a big chunk of revenue if India became an independent country.


04. Never in his life had he mentioned anything in favor of India and the natives. He once publically said, “I hate Indians…they are beastly people with a beastly religion.”


05. With reference to  Palestinians his remark was couched in filthy language...  as “barbaric hordes who ate little but camel dung”.


06. Quite popular for his  concepts related to '' eugenics''  (advocacy of improving the human species by selectively mating people with specific desirable hereditary traits), he was for the separation of “feeble-minded” people, alongside being intrigued by the idea of sterilization, to halt the breeding of “unfit” people posing “a very terrible danger to the race.


 07. According to John Charmley, author of Churchill: The End of Glory.   In Churchill's view,  ''white protestant Christians were at the top, above white Catholics, while Indians were higher than Africans, he adds. "Churchill saw himself and Britain as being the winners in a social Darwinian hierarchy."


 08. Strongly believing in  superiority of the British race,  Winston  Churchill was quite   confident  that Britain would win the war against  Nazi Germany  that consisted of  Prussians, a formerly “barbarous tribe”.


09. Often falling prey to severe criticism and controversies  Churchill  blabbered beyond ethics. He had  been denounced by a large section of people  for advocating the use of chemical weapons - primarily against Kurds and Afghans.  He asserted, "I cannot understand this squeamishness about the use of gas," he wrote in a memo during his role as minister for war and air in 1919..... "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes."


10. Turning his carping remarks against the Africans, when quashing insurgents in Sudan in his early career,   Churchill boasted of killing three “savages.”


11. Then, as a junior member of parliament,  Churchill supported Britain’s plan for additional conquests, stressing that “Aryan stock is bound to triumph”.


12. However, his attitude to the Bengal famine of 1943-44  that was aggravated by Japanese occupation of  Burma, a year before is the most well-known source of irritation and abomination  with   Churchill accused of murdering over 4 million Indians.  


13. Churchill  purposely diverted the  Australian ships laden with food grains anchored at Calcutta's diamond harbor to proceed to Europe to improve the  buffer stock in case of war in that region.  "The War Cabinet under Churchill  ordered the build-up of a stockpile of wheat for feeding European civilians after they had been liberated. So 170,000 tons of Australian wheat bypassed starving Bengal  - destined not for consumption but for storage,


14. He vehemently ignored  the advice of conscientious officers in Delhi to save the dying Bengalis in 1943.  Churchill was the main culprit responsible for the death of  a few million natives of Bengal and  he  had no qualm about his unpardonable blunder. In this respect he was more a psychopath than supposedly one of the greatest Englishmen of the last century. 


 15. When concerned British officials wrote to  Churchill about the serious nature of famine in Bengal,  he peevishly responded “Why hasn’t Gandhi died yet?” and then went on to say the famine was caused by Indians for “breeding like rabbits”


16. Turning to Gandhiji, Churchill had scant respect for him.  His remarks  devoid of decency and basic courtesy,  were quite sharp and unethical. When Gandhi was attending the 2nd round table conference in London Churchill said  of his anti-colonialist adversary in 1931.  "It is alarming and nauseating to see Mr Gandhi, a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir… striding half-naked up the steps of the Vice-regal Palace.


17. On yet another occasion When Gandhiji resorted to fast unto death, Churchill said,   ''Gandhi should not be released on the account of a mere threat of fasting............. "We should be rid of a bad man and an enemy of the Empire if he died."



18. Churchill's defiant  opposition to Gandhi, says  Richard Toye, Historian,  was quite well-known. He didn't want India to make any moves towards self-government to the extent of opposing his own party's leaders and being generally quite hostile to Hinduism.


19. Churchill's stance  on India was very much that of a late Victorian imperialist, Charmley adds. "Churchill  was terribly alarmed that giving the Indians home rule was going to lead to the downfall of the British Empire and the end of civilization."  

20. His views  on  Jews also were  sometimes laced with anti-Semitic  rhetoric.  Churchill  also "shared the low-level casual anti-Semitism of his class and kind"
