Maharajah's College of Mysore is one of the oldest colleges in India and began as an  English-school known as "Maharaja Patashala". Founded by Maharajah  of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wadiyar III in 1833, later it was converted into a High School in 1868 on the  advice  of a British officer, General Fraser.  Maharajah himself then would  not have thought that  his school would reach such a dizzy height and become a big  educational institution of great repute. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, famous Philosopher and and man of erudition,  and  the first Vice-President and second President of India, once taught at the college.Upon the death of Maharajah, on March 27, 1868, it was transferred to the  Government of Mysore. The foundation stone of the present building was laid by none other than Prince Albert Victor of Wales during his tour of India on 27 November 1889 in Mysore, when  Chamarajendra Wadiyar X was the ruler.  After up-gradation  in 1879,  the college was affiliated with University of Madras and later  was upgraded to the first grade college in 1894.

Built  at a cost of Rs 9.41 lakh at the time, the colonial design is accentuated by arcaded verandahs on two floors, a central mansard roof and projecting end-blocks. Carefully included are the  ornate elements like impost mouldings and pilastered capitals.  Nearly four decades later, the building of Yuvaraja's College,  was built in 1927 close-by using this college as a model.When  the University of Mysore was established in 1916, by the Mysore ruler Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and then Dewan Sri M Visvesvaraya, the college underwent certain redesign. It you take a look at the roots of this university it goes back to Lakshmipuram Govt. High school started by the Mysore ruler who had a separate building constructed in 1920.

It was at this college, the varsity started to operate from the sprawling campus and the V-C's office was housed on the campus till 1947 when Crawford Hall was built. In 1917, MA classes were started at the college. It  became a premier educational institution in that part of India.  Besides S. Radhakrishnan,  the college has had distinguished teachers such as Prof. JC Rollo, Albert Mackintosh, Kuvempu, Shama Rao, K. Hanumanta Rao, andothers.

Notable alumni include  writer R.K. Narayan, S. M. Krishna, Venkataramiah Sitaramiah, Y. G. Krishnamurthy, Author, Freedom Fighter and Yogi.
As of July 2013, the University of Mysore was accredited "Grade A" by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).  As  for its  academic staff  - faculty it was ranked amongst the top 5 in across India.
