The Jai Vilas Mahal (also known as the Jai Vilas Palace), a nineteenth century  structure in Gwalior is still the residence of the Royal Maratha Sciendia family. India. The royal members use part of the huge building.   Established in 1874 by Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharajah of Gwalior, the palace is known for its architectural beauty and grandeur  and was designed and built by Sir Michael Filose. Known for the intelligent  blend of Tuscan, Italian and Corinthian styles of architecture  prevalent in Europe in those days- the first floor reflects Tuscan style, the second  is that of Italian-Doric and the third floor is of Corinthian style. Covering 1,240,771 square feet the interior of the palace is highly embellished. The interior of the large Durbar Hall is  decorated with gilt and gold furnishings and adorned with a huge carpet and gigantic chandeliers. The big Durbar Hall  measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 41 feet height is impressive visitors can not miss this one. This highly decorated  hall has a pair of the largest chandeliers in the world, which is believed to be the heaviest in Asia. Yet another attraction is a large  dining table which has a  custom made silver train that was used as a table trolley for serving food and drinks to the guests.

Located in the heart of the city, Jai Vilas Palace is one of the grandest buildings of Gwalior with  400 rooms, out of which  40 rooms  form the famous Jiwaji Rao Scindia Museum. The museum was founded by Rajmata Shrimant Vijayaraje Scindia, in memory of Srimant Jiwajirao Scindia. and it was opened to public on 12th December 1964 by the then Indian President  Dr. S Radhakrishnan. It is called H.H Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Museum. The palace is also known to house a collection of gadgets and antiques of past era.   Other attractions of the palace  are the reading rooms, drawing rooms, JSM hall, and breakfast room.

The museum has a large collection of useful books, art forms that developed locally,  weapons of various sorts that date back to the reign of Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan. It also preserves the original shield of Jhansi Ki Rani. Chitrangada Raje Art Gallery, a part of the museum promotes the art and cultural heritage of Gwalior.
