The East India Company, in its early 60 years of its rule in India were more concerned about their trading activities, wheeling dealing and profit-making than Indian natives' welfare. In the realm of education, they took little interest, exception being the Calcutta Madrassa (to study Muslim Laws and related subjects) set up in 1781 by Warren Hastings and a Sanskrit College at Varanasi founded in 1791 by Jonathan Duncan to study the Hindu law and philosophy. The purpose of these institution was to help the administration in matters related to Muslim laws and Hindu laws, etc., by the trained people from the institutions. Though the credit goes to the government in the spread of western education in India, the missionaries and enlightened Indians played a keen role. The missionaries preferred modern secular westernized education and strongly advised the English company to promote it.

A small beginning was made with the introduction of The Charter Act of 1813, but, the English company made funds available only in 1823. In 1835, it was decided by the government to impart western sciences and literature through the medium of English. Because of paucity of funds the government wanted to train Indians from upper and middle classes through a few colleges and these people, in turn, would train others. This will promote percolation of modern education and ideas from the higher society downward to the masses without government opening new schools and institutions. The government policy was highly criticized for allocating

At this juncture, an important mile stone in the growth of western education in India was the Wood’s Dispatch (the document dispatched from the Court of Directors and popularly named after Sir Charles Wood, President of the Board of Control) of 1854, asking the government to impart education also to the masses, not mainly focusing on the higher strata of the society. Based on the Wood's Dispatch, Departments of Education were formed in all province. Degree granting affiliating universities came up in 1857 at Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. In 1858 Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the famous Bengali novelist, became one of the first two graduates of Calcutta University.

It is pertinent to note that the modern education in the colonial India made a rapid stride on account of sincere efforts put in by progressive Indians, foreign Christian missionaries, and humanitarian officials and other Englishmen. They were the ones who took the modern education in the nook and corner of India.
During the Raj in the 1850s, when many universities and colleges came up to impart western education to the natives, the reasons were two fold. They wanted the Indians to be familiar with the latest technological and scientific advances and secondly, the Raj needed an efficient manpower to run a vast administration along with the British administrators. The structure, methods, curricula and content were all designed to serve colonialism. Though the education aimed at the carrier, it provided an opportunity for the educated Indians and intellectuals to promote the ideas of democracy, nationalism, anti-imperialism and social and economic equality and equal justice among the rural and urban masses.

The Daly college in the city of Indore, now in Madhya Pradesh, was started for different purposes. Previously known as the East Rajkumar College) it is one of the oldest institutions in India. Founded in 1870 by Sir Henry Daly of the British Indian Army during India's colonial British Raj, it started out as a Residency School called Indore Residency College. In 1882, it was renamed as The Daly College in honor of Sir. Henry Daly.

It was founded by the Resident Governor of the erstwhile Presidency with a view to educating the children of the royalty, nobility and aristocracy of Central Indian Princely States of the 'Marathas', 'Rajputs', 'Mohammedans' and 'Bundelas' ( Rajput clan of Chattari lineage). It has the credit of being one of the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the world. Simply, the institution was meant only for filthy rich pupils of noble ancestry!!

It was indeed a rare coincidence that Sir Hugh Daly, Sir Henry's son, became an agent to the Governor-General for Central India at Indore, a position previously held by his father. He took a keen interest in that institution founded by his father and had received ample support from the Indian rulers. H.H. Maharajah

Sir Tukojirao Holkar III, Maharaja of Indore (Hokar State) then donated not only 118 acres (0.48 km2) of land east of the old campus but also had the buildings - two student houses built on the new land along with a temple, a mosque and the Principal's residence. The work began in 1906. The Indo-Saracenic style sf architecture was designed by by Col. Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. The beautiful clock tower was a contribution from the Maharajah Sir Sayaji Rao III Gaekwad of Baroda. On 8 th of November, 1912 H.E. Lord Hardinge (1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst) Viceroy and Governor-General of India, officially inaugurated the main building.

Admiral of the Fleet Lord Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Viceroy and Governor-General of India : (1947–1948) was a prominent patron of this college.
Major Lord Willingdon, 1st Marquess of Willingdon, Viceroy and Governor-General of India : (1931–1933) was the last board of governors of this institution.
Presently, it is a major educational institute with a student strength of more than 2,000 students. and is currently ranked 6th in India (Central Board). The school is a co-educational, residential public school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and to CIE as well. In 2007 the first International Round Square Conference was held at Daly College, attended as its president by former King Constantine II of Greece. The Indian postal dept. issued a commemorative postal stamp on the institute in December, 2007.
The Daly College Business School (DCBS), in collaboration with the De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. DCBS offers an undergraduate course in business management- Bachelor in Management (Business Studies) (BMBS).
