 Christ Church, on the way to Srirangam, near north of  Teppakulam in Tiruchirapalli Corporation, Tamil Nadu, South India was one of the oldest churches in the state. It was built by Fr. Christian Schwartz, an Angelo-Saxon missionary of Thanjavur  in the year 1762 to 1766. It belongs to the society for the propagation of the gospel.  Fr. Schwartz was a mentor to the great maratha ruler of Thanjavur Raja Serfoji and he had built a church in that place dedicated to Fr. Schwartz. 


Fr. Schwartz took so much pain to build this Church and he approached many people for monetary aids for the construction of this Church. About this church, two factors are worthy of mention. Most of the funds to build this church came from British Garrison officers who had been stationed here for sometimes. it is believed the church has a  tomb of Rebecca Drake (1777) whose grand daughter married  the Prime Minister of Britain Sir Robert Peel, a British Conservative statesman, who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 10 December,1834 to 8, April,1835, and again from 30 August,1841 to 29 June,1846. Lots of people visit this historical church built during the East India company's rule.

Thiruchi cantonment was quite well known during the colonial period. Robert Clive, who was instrumental in laying the foundation for the British Empire came to this town (now a big city) and stayed here for a short period. He led the British forces against the French and their ally (local ruler) and won the battle. He got a name and the East India company gave him promotion. After This victory, it was success for him all the way and ultimately the British seized the whole of Bengal
